PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) has become a common health issue for women nowadays. It affects the hormone levels of women and causes various disorders in the body. Polycystic ovary syndrome treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and reducing risks in the long term. This blog article contains the possible causes, symptoms, and diagnosis methods. The procedure of treatment has also been discussed briefly here.

What is PCOS?

PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) refers to the various symptoms caused by the hormonal disorder in women that occurs during reproductive age. An individual with PCOS may have difficulties with the menstrual cycle.

In PCOS, tiny sacs of fluid emerge on the outer edge of the ovary, which are cysts. The cysts contain immature eggs called follicles. These cysts produce hormones that are androgens, which are usually found in males, but in the female body, it is produced in smaller amounts. Females suffering from PCOS have a large amount of androgen production.

Causes of PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

The exact causes of PCOS can not be determined, but it can be assumed that a high production rate of male hormones prevents the female hormone production from the ovary.

Hormonal disorder

Imbalance in hormone production can be seen in females having PCOS, such as high amounts of luteinising hormone (LH) and Testosterone production can worsen the condition.

Genetics

According to several studies, it can be concluded that PCOS may be connected with genes. A family history of PCOS may be responsible for such a health issue.

Insulin resistance

When body cells become resistant to the work of insulin, the sugar level in the blood increases. High blood sugar leads to the production of androgen, the male hormone, and prevents ovulation. Insulin resistance is one of the major causes of PCOS, which increases the risk of obesity.

Inflammation

Women having PCOS have chronic inflammation. The problem of being overweight increases the risk of inflammation.

Symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome symptoms need to be assessed properly to prevent their harmful impacts. The symptoms are as follows:

Abnormal menstruation

Females suffering from PCOS may have frequent periods or a period that lasts for many days with a heavy flow. For instance, they may have nine menses or fewer in a year.  The periods may last for about 35 days. They face difficulties in getting pregnant.

Excessive growth of hair

Most women experience the problem of unnecessary growth of hair in their faces or bodies.  Sometimes hair can be seen on the belly, back, or chest. This hair growth is due to the high amount of androgen production, and this is called hirsutism.

Obesity

Obesity is a common problem for 50% to 80% of females with PCOS. They gain a lot of weight in a short time, and it is difficult to lose weight.

Thin hair

Hair loss from the scalp is a noteworthy symptom in this health issue. Females who have PCOS may have male-like hair patterns.

Infertility

One of the main symptoms of PCOS is difficulty conceiving. Due to the lack of necessary ovulation, females can not become pregnant normally.

Acne on the face

The high amount of androgen production leads to the oiliness in the skin. Acne on the face, back, or chest can be seen due to the oily skin.

Polycystic ovaries

The ovary becomes enlarged due to the multiple tiny cysts that contain immature eggs. The ovary can not work normally.

Diagnosis of PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome treatment requires a proper diagnosis to cure the health issue. Your doctor will assess Polycystic ovary syndrome symptoms, then suggest the following tests :

Pelvic Exam

The Pelvic Exam evaluates the condition of your uterus, ovaries. This test is necessary for the proper treatment of PCOS.

Ultrasound

Through ultrasound, a doctor checks the size of the ovaries and the thickness of the lining of the uterus.  In this test a device is placed in vagina and sound wave to create images of organs and blood vessels.

Blood Tests

Your doctor may suggest that you undergo tests to check the glucose level in your blood. The levels of androgen hormones and other hormones will be checked through blood tests. Your cholesterol level may also be checked.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Treatment

Polycystic ovary syndrome treatment involves numerous factors such as the age of the patient, symptoms, and overall health condition.

Medication

Polycystic ovary syndrome treatment depends on the proper use of medicines, as they help regulate ovulation. Birth control pills are taken to normalize the menstrual cycle. Some medicines are prescribed to prevent the secretion of androgens, which also helps to reduce the acne problem and the excess growth of hair.

Changes in lifestyle

Adopting a healthy diet and several effective techniques to reduce stress is necessary to get rid of this health issue. Exercise needs to be included in your daily routine to stay healthy.

Weight reduction

Overweight is a serious health issue, so it is essential to lose weight. You can reduce weight by daily exercise and yoga.

Healthy diet

A balanced diet is essential to cure PCOS, as it helps to lose weight. It also helps to regulate the glucose level in the blood.

Surgery

Your doctor may suggest surgery if your PCOS can not be cured through medicines. Ovarian drilling is a process in which a tiny hole is made in the ovary using a laser to ensure normal ovulation.

Conclusion

PCOS is a health issue that affects the menstrual cycle and leads to other difficulties for millions of females all over the world. It is caused by hormonal imbalance and an unhealthy lifestyle. Obesity, hair loss, and irregular periods are the common symptoms of PCOS. By following a healthy lifestyle and proper treatment, you can recover from this problem.
